How to Answer “Why Do You Want This Job?” in an NHS Consultant Interview

“Why do you want this job?”

It’s a simple question, but it’s also one where even the most brilliant doctors can freeze.

Why? Because most candidates give the same generic answer:

“I’m passionate about the specialty and want to develop my career.”

Unfortunately, this doesn’t differentiate you from other applicants. Panels hear it all the time.

To stand out, your answer needs to be specific, researched, and aligned with the Trust’s priorities.

Step 1: Do Your Homework

Preparation is key. You don’t need insider information, just the publicly available details that show you understand the organisation and its challenges.

Start with:

  • The CQC report, understand the Trust’s performance and priorities.

  • Trust values, consider how your experience reflects the behaviours and outcomes they care about.

  • Board minutes, know the current projects, service improvements, and initiatives being discussed.

By connecting your experience to what the Trust values, your answer becomes compelling rather than generic.

Step 2: Tailor Your Experience to Their Needs

Once you’ve done your research, ask yourself:

  • Which of my projects or achievements directly align with what this Trust is working on?

  • How can I highlight outcomes that demonstrate I can meet their priorities?

  • What makes me the best candidate to address the specific challenges they face?

This isn’t about exaggeration, it’s about matching your strengths with their requirements in a way that feels natural and authentic.

Step 3: Ask Questions That Show Insight

A strong answer doesn’t just explain why you want the job, it demonstrates your engagement. Prepare questions that reflect your understanding of the Trust’s needs:

  • “I noticed your recent QI project improved discharge times in paediatrics, how are you planning to sustain those improvements?”

  • “Given the Trust’s emphasis on integrated care, how does the consultant team collaborate across departments?”

Questions like these show the panel you’ve researched the role and are already thinking about how you could contribute.

Why This Approach Gives You an Advantage

Candidates who do this research and alignment:

  • Appear well-prepared and confident.

  • Demonstrate insight into the role and Trust.

  • Stand out from applicants giving generic, career development answers.

When you can link your experience to the organisation’s values and priorities, your answer becomes memorable, and positions you as a candidate ready for consultant-level responsibility.
