Podcast: Why You Want This Job Matters More Than You Think in Consultant Interviews

One of the most underestimated interview questions is also one of the most revealing: Why do you want this job? Interview panels are not just assessing competence or experience. They are trying to understand motivation, commitment, and whether you genuinely want to join their team.

In this discussion, Becky and Tessa explain why clarity, authenticity, and genuine interest in a specific role are critical to interview success. They explore how a lack of conviction can undermine even the strongest candidate, and how finding a personal connection to the role can help you build rapport with the panel and stand out.

Expert Discussion: Why You Want This Job

Becky:
This week we are looking at why you need to be clear on why you want this job in particular.

Tessa:
Yes, this really matters. The panel needs to know that you are applying for this job because this is the job of your dreams, or at least the job that you really want.

We do have people coming through the academy who say they have been for several interviews before and did not get any of them, and that they basically just need a job. That is not what the panel wants to hear.

This is about really understanding some specifics around this job and showing the panel that you care about it and have passion for this particular role. That passion helps you build a connection with the panel as you move through the interview.

Becky:
I think you really need to dig deep. Not everyone is applying for their dream job, and that is okay, but you have to find a way to want the job and convey that to the panel.

It is not just about saying the right words out loud. You need to genuinely know why you are applying, because it will show. If you go into an interview and you do not really want the job, the panel will sense it immediately.

Everyone wants to be wanted. Panels are no different. They want you to want to be there. So think beforehand and be clear in your own mind why you want this job. Even if it is temporary, persuade yourself that this is a great opportunity and go into the interview wanting to get the role. Otherwise, you are doing yourself and the panel a disservice.

Tessa:
It also helps to think about specifics. What is it about their team that appeals to you? What is it about the work they do in their department that engages you?

Do they serve a diverse patient population that you enjoy working with? Are they focusing on a particular service model or area of care that interests you? Do you admire their outcomes or reputation?

Think about what connects you to this job and be ready to talk about it clearly and confidently in your interview.

Key Takeaways

  • Interview panels want candidates who genuinely want the role, not those who just need a job.
  • Lack of enthusiasm is easy for panels to detect and can undermine an otherwise strong interview.
  • You do not need it to be your dream job, but you must find authentic reasons for wanting it.
  • Being clear in your own mind helps your motivation come across naturally.
  • Specific details about the team, department, and service strengthen your answer.

Showing passion helps build connection and trust with the panel.
